Four is the year the questions change. A three-year-old asks what something is. A four-year-old asks why — and then asks again, because your first answer didn't satisfy them. This is the age when a child starts building a working theory of how the world holds together and where they fit inside it. They are testing whether the rules stay the same when they push on them. They are learning that other people have feelings that don't match their own. That's the child we're handed when a family enrolls a four-year-old, and it shapes how the whole year is built. ## The year before kindergarten is not a year of drills Pre-K gets talked about as preparation, and it is — but not in the way parents sometimes worry about. You can sit a four-year-old down with worksheets until they produce letters on command. What that teaches is letter production. It doesn't teach a child that trying something hard is worth doing, or that they're the kind of person who can. They notice when someone is left out at the sand table. They have opinions about fairness, usually loud ones. They are old enough to be genuinely sorry and old enough to decide not to be. That's a real moral life, running at four-year-old scale, and it's the place where the language of faith actually lands. So it doesn't stay in a devotional slot on the schedule. It shows up when a teacher kneels down and helps two children work out who had the truck first — not by assigning blame, but by helping each of them see there was another child in the story. It shows up in being told, on an ordinary Tuesday, that they are loved and known by God, on a day when they haven't earned anything in particular. Four-year-olds are beginning to sort the world into good at things and bad at things. Hearing that their worth isn't on that list matters more than they can explain yet. We're not trying to produce a child who can recite doctrine. We're trying to give them a first, honest experience of being treated with the kind of patience they'll eventually learn to extend to someone else. ## What you'll see at home Parents of our four-year-olds tell us the change shows up sideways.
